It hasn’t been the best year for Angelina Jolie, who suffered from high blood pressure to a divorce with husband Brad Pitt, and now a Bell’s palsy diagnosis.
Bell’s palsy is a condition in which the muscles on one side of your face become weak or paralyzed. It’s caused by some kind of trauma to the seventh cranial nerve and can happen to anyone, but seems to occur more often in people who have diabetes or are recovering from viral infections. Symptoms are usually only temporary.
Jolie, 42, underwent acupuncture treatment to recover from the condition, which caused one side of her face to droop slightly. She mentioned she has been dealing with a lot more gray hair and drier skin. “I can’t tell if it’s menopause or if it’s just been the year I’ve had,” she said, adding, “sometimes women in families put themselves last… until it manifests itself in their own health.”
She has had other health scares in the past and underwent several surgeries: a double mastectomy in 2013 and a hysterectomy in 2015. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died from ovarian cancer at the age of 56.
In terms of her divorce, Jolie has said things really started to go south in the summer of 2016, when she wrapped up the filming of First They Killed My Father. “Things became difficult,” she told Vanity Fair. However, she does everything she can to keep the divorce woes out of sight when she’s around her six children. “I do not want my children to be worried about me. I think it’s very important to cry in the shower and not in front of them. They need to know that everything’s going to be all right even when you’re not sure it is,” she said.
We certainly wish the best for the Jolie-Pitt family during this rough period, and hope that Jolie doesn’t have any more health issues in the future. She deserves a rest.
