Gabrielle Union revealed that in an attempt to conceive a child with her husband, NBA superstar Dwyane Wade, she suffered through multiple miscarriages.
It’s a heartbreaking fight millions of women know well.
In her new book “We’re Going to Need More Wine,” Union, the star of Being Mary Jane, discusses infertility and failed in vitro fertilization treatments.
“I have had eight or nine miscarriages,” the 44-year-old wrote. “For three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant — I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle or coming out of an IVF cycle.”
Union wrote that she and Wade remained bursting with love and willing to do anything they could to meet the child they dreamed of.
The couple exchanged vows in August 2014 and the actress didn’t see children in her future; however, after finding joy in raising Wade’s three boys, she had a change of heart.
“I never wanted kids,” she said. “Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them.”
As if infertility isn’t struggle enough, due to her being in the public eye, Union is asked by both family and strangers alike when she plans to have children.
The constant reminder is hard on her so she, like many others, learned to work around it.
“For so many women, and not just in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?’” she says. “A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.”
To add to her list of pressures, Union has been the target of pregnancy rumors. She confessed that once a month she goes into hiding because her bloating causes her to appear like she could be in her second trimester. “I feel like I’m a member of SEAL Team Six undercover because I don’t want people to speculate.”
Getting pregnant after 40 gets harder but hopefully this power couple will be completing their family soon.
