Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder have just about the craziest parenting plan we have ever heard, and they plan to take it full head-on after the birth of their baby.
“We’ll take the baby’s first month for ourselves,” said Reed, adding, “After the baby arrives, we’re doing one month of silence. Just the three of us, no visitors, and we’re turning off our phones too, so there’s no expectation for us to communicate.”
One might think, why would any new parent in their right mind want to do this? Are they insane? Are they going to go insane? How are they going to do this without any outside help?
The goal of the couple is to bond with their baby, without all of the distractions and interruptions of today’s technical and highly social-media-crazed world. The mother-to-be also stated that she doesn’t want to feel the pressure to be posting photos and updates of her newborn all of the time. “You don’t get those first 30 days back,” she says. “And we want to be fully present.”
Though we commend the couple and admire their courage to try this one month of silence, we wonder if they will make it or break it. Sometimes, you just need to call your mom up at midnight and ask her if the poop is supposed to be a greenish yellow, or if you can cut your baby’s nails this early. And then, of course, there’s just the fact that maybe Reed and Somerhalder will miss and crave the comfort of another human being to talk to and converse with. They will be experiencing waves of exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and stress. Let’s hope they don’t turn on each other! Good luck!
